Containing carefully reared rare breed pork, Hampshire Farmers’ Markets producer Ambrose Sausages’  unique Gilbert’s Original Sausage, impressed the judges of the recent BPEX British Sausage Week Awards. Sue and Phil Ambrose, who turned their rural business into a full time business in 2013, came away with a Gold Award for this traditional sausage, which was also voted Best Sausage in the South East.

Competing against over 500 entries, Ambrose Sausages also picked up a second Gold Award for their Jamaican Jerk sausage, with both awards being presented to them by former England rugby player and Master Chef winner Phil Vickery at a recent awards ceremony.

Sue Ambrose commented:  “We are absolutely delighted and proud to have won best pork sausage in the South East of England and would like to thank all our family, friends & work associates for their support and especially Phil’s Grandfather Gilbert for creating such a delicious pork sausage recipe.”

We do not have a retail outlet, so selling our sausages and free range pork products at Hampshire Farmer’s Markets has given us a fantastic opportunity. In our younger days – Phil studied meat technology at Smithfield College and learned his butchery and ability to select quality meat from his grandfather and I trained and worked in the catering industry. Farming is a fairly new experience for both of us, but it seemed the most logical thing to do. Not only did we want to bring the Original Ambrose Sausage back into the market place, we wanted to make all our products from fully traceable, free range local, rare breed pork. By regularly attending Hampshire Farmer’s Markets we have been able to grow our business. They have given us the opportunity to sell directly to the public and provided us with access to media and marketing that we would not otherwise have benefited from. For small livestock producers like us, being a member of Hampshire Farmer’s Market is an essential part of our business,” concluded Sue Ambrose.

Based in Eastleigh, the Ambrose Sausages are regular stall holders at the Hampshire Farmers’ Markets held throughout the county.  Hampshire Farmers’ Markets Business Manager Alex Handford commented:

We are all thrilled about Ambrose Sausages winning 2 Golds and the prestigious Best in South East award.  Their sausages are very popular with our shoppers who come to our markets and actively seek them out.  Sue and Phil have worked so hard to create such a high quality tasty product and Hampshire Farmers’ Market are proud to have them as part of our team of stall holder producers.  They have created a range of high quality local produce and it is great to be involved in the development and growth of their business.”
