hen Martin Martindale of Greenfield Pork entered eight of his free range pork products into a major South East Region Awards, with 200 entrants in the competition he didn’t expect all of his products to win gold. His family run pork business won five gold awards for their sausages, including the Trophy for the Best Sausage, their King Alfred Traditional Pork Sausage, in the British Pig Executive Roadshow Awards recently.
Martin and his team also picked up a further three gold awards for their Chorizo Product – Gold Award Speciality Pork Product, Pork Faggots – Gold Award Ready Meal and Cured Back Bacon – Gold Award Bacon Product.
“It was a great team effort and we are delighted that Greenfield got the Best Sausage in the South East Award and it will take us forward to the Champion of Champions for the 4th time and a chance of winning the Best Sausage in the UK Award. We will be going all out until we achieve the Best in Britain,” commented Martin Martindale.
Greenfield Pork has been part of the Hampshire Farmers’ Markets since the very beginning, with their Hog Roasts proving to be very popular with market visitors. Martin said: “We have never missed a Hampshire Farmers’ Market since the first one in 1998. Being part of the markets has helped us cope with the fluctuating market price of pork and has given us a retail market which has helped us to survive and also to grow our Hog Roast business.”
Hampshire Farmers’ Market Business Manager Alex Handford commented: “We are all thrilled by Greenfield Pork’s success with winning so many awards. As one of our original producers, Greenfield Pork is a great example of the high quality producers who bring their local produce to our markets, where shoppers can connect directly with them and be assured of the provenance and food chain.”
The Greenfield Pork stand selling fresh pork products and their popular Hog Roast, attends Hampshire Farmers’ Markets at Winchester, Andover, Petersfield, Romsey, Southsea each month, as well as annual food festivals at Cosham and the Alresford Watercress Festival in May. Their hog roast service is also very much in demand for private and corporate events.
The family team of Martin, his wife Dawn, son Tom work together with their butcher Jon-Jon Tingzon and Guy Waterhouse within their business on 5 acres of arable land near Over Wallop, Hampshire. Their free range Hampshire cross breed pigs are reared outside in spacious paddocks which allow them to behave naturally and to grow in conditions which provide fresh air, natural daylight, exercise and the minimum of stress. “The Hampshire breed really does give that additional taste and flavour to our pork products and it is interesting to see how consumer tastes have changed in recent years. The most popular joint was leg of pork, now most people are favouring shoulder and belly pork and want speciality products such as our Chorizo sausage.”
