As part of the recent British Food Fortnight celebrations, the Hampshire Farmers’ Markets with the Emsworth Business Assocation, organised a number of School Workshops at three Emsworth schools – the Emsworth, Westbourne and St James’ Primary Schools.
The Food Education Workshops involved pupils from year 6 who discovered how to identify varieties of fruits and vegetables, took part in food tasting of fruits, vegetables, fish, soda bread, butter and joined in smoothie making and butter making.
The children worked with a wide range of local produce including Hampshire trout, apple juice, tomatoes, squashes, coloured beetroot and multi-coloured carrots.
“It is always a joy to take produce from our Hampshire Farmers’ Market to the children to see,” commented Alex Handford, Business Manager for Hampshire Farmers’ Markets. “This gave them the opportunity to touch, taste and experience some less familiar fruits and vegetables which will hopefully encourage them to try new things in the future.”
