What’s the best way to store apples?

September 1st, 2010

You might consider buying apples in bulk from the market while they’re at their best or you might have an abundance of apples from a tree in your garden. If so, you will need to store them over the winter.

The best way is to choose your apples carefully, discarding any bruised ones, then wrap carefully in newspaper and store in a sturdy cardboard box or container. Make sure you don’t leave the container anywhere where mice or other animals can get to it!

What’s in Season in August?

August 4th, 2010

August is the height of the growing season and there’s so much to choose from at the markets. Soft fruits in particular are great and you may be thinking about buying them in bull to make preserves.

It’s still barbecue season so make the most of the fresh salads on offer that complement whatever you have on the grill, you could try some buffalo or venison burgers for something different or make kebabs from fresh aubergine, courgettes and sweetcorn. The game season starts later this month for grouse too, so look out for fresh game at the market.

Why is Hampshire Farmers’ Markets Different from other farmers’ markets?

May 28th, 2010

You’ll find farmers’ markets at locations across the country. They are all vibrant, fun places to shop where you can meet the people who make the food you buy. Some however, like Hampshire Farmers Markets have a strict criteria for stallholders bringing produce to sell.

HFM is accredited by FARMA, the Farmers’ Markets certification body. Our producers must have grown, reared, baked, bottled, pickled or otherwise produced their goods within the county of Hampshire or ten miles of its borders.

This is what makes us especially local and you can shop knowing that what you spend goes back into the local economy as well as knowing that your purchases have travelled very few food miles to get to the stall.

Alex’s Answers – How do I cook Asparagus?

April 28th, 2010

Asparagus is now in season and there are lots of ways you can prepare this versatile vegetable.

It’s delicious simply barbequed or served steamed with new potatoes and hollandaise sauce. You could also use it as an ingredient in a hearty risotto or a tastyy tart.

Alex’s Answers: Is there anything in season in March?

February 26th, 2010

March is that time of the year known as ‘The Hungry Gap’ when the winter root vegetable season is coming to an end and other produce isn’t yet ready for harvesting.

However, it’s not quite over for the root vegetables and you could try Jerusalem Artichoke for a change!

Ask Alex: Stilton Cheese

July 7th, 2009

Hi Alex,

I really want to get some fresh fruit and vegetables and do my best to follow the seasons. Can you tell me what I should be looking at in the markets at the moment? John, Romsey

Alex says: Fruits and vegetables at their best this month and available at the HFM markets are; apples, blackberries, blueberries, damsons, plums.

Cabbages, carrots, cauliflower, chard, courgette, cucumber, fennel, garlic, kale, lettuce, onion, runner beans, spinach, squashes, sweetcorn, tomatoes and watercress.

The blackberry season spans the end of the summer and the beginning of autumn.  September blackberries are delicious served simply with a little sugar and a lot of cream! Later, further into autumn deliciously comforting hot in pies and puddings made by combining blackberries with the first apples of the season.  Blackberries can be used instead of blueberries in the Alison’s blueberry muffin recipe.
