Hampshire Farmers’ Markets’ drinks producer, Mr Whitehead’s Drinks has struck a deal to bring fresh, local apple juice to the county’s schools.
The company, based in Alton, is to supply Hampshire County Council Catering Services (HC3S) and Southampton City Catering with apple juice for school meals in over 500 primary and 40 secondary schools across the two authorities.
The deal will also see the form bring apple juice to all Hampshire County Council care homes.
The juice will be made from various varieties of apples including Cox, Royal Gala, Bramley, Russet, Discovery, and Braeburn, and are all grown on Blackmoor Estate near Liss.
The juice is pressed and bottled at Selborne near Alton and contains no added sugar, chemicals, flavours or preservative. Previously, apple juice on the school meals menu was imported.
Angus Whitehead of Mr Whitehead’s Drinks said: “This opportunity provides Mr Whitehead’s Drinks with long term stability. For children to learn about how food is produced and where it comes from has to be good for their education. With all the various varieties of apples we’re using throughout the year they’ll also be able to discover how different apples have different flavours. We’re also planning to be able to invite school groups to come and see how apple juice is made and have a go at pressing juice.”
More information about this apple juice is available at www.mr-whiteheads-drinks.co.uk. The deal was brokered by county foods group, Hampshire Fare.

Hampshire Farmers’ Market producer Martin Martindale of Greenfield Pork Products has been awarded Supreme Champion of the 2010 Great Hampshire, Sausage, Pie & Ready Meal Competition, for his free range pork, goat’s cheese and watercress sausage.
Greenfield Pork, based in Andover, also won champion trophies for Best Hampshire Sausage, Best Speciality Pork Sausage, Best Traditional Pork Sausage and Best Hampshire Farmers’ Market Entry. The competition was held by Hampshire Fare, the county food group.

Hampshire Farmer’s Markets spokesman Alex Handford said, “We send our very best congratulations to Martin. His sausages are really tasty and this award can only boost awareness that buying local is best for the Hampshire economy as well as best for the customer.”

The Hampshire Farmers’ Market at Romsey is permanently moving to a new location in 2010. The new market, will be held at Alma Road Car Park from Sunday 7th February 2010.
Romsey market is held bi-monthly and is very popular with local people. However, the opportunity arose to move to a larger, much more central location in the town which will enable the market to expand and give more people the opportunity to take advantage of local produce.
To celebrate the change the market on Sunday 7th February will be a hive of cooking activity. We’ll have our cooking unit at the market and will have cooking demonstrations from Lainston House at Sparsholt, The White Horse in Romsey and The Wheatsheaf at Braishfield.
Some of the recipes will have an ‘apple’ theme, to coincide with National Bramley Apple Week.
Also at the market for the children will be a petting animal farm with ponies, sheep, calves, rabbits and chickens amongst others.
Hampshire Farmers Markets has strict criteria for its producers which means that anything sold at market must have been grown, reared, baked, pickled or otherwise produced within Hampshire or ten miles of its borders. This means that whatever you buy, you are supporting the local economy and its farmers.
Our producers have pulled out all the stops with special offers at the new Romsey market:
One voucher per transaction, applicable to all the above offers. The vouchers offers are available in the Romsey Advertiser this week.
Our Markets in February take place at the following locations:
Petersfield – 7 February
Romsey – 7 February
Alton – 13 February
Winchester 14 February
Andover – 21 February

Visit Chandlers Ford Farmers’ Market for the best of breakfast offers.
It’s said that breakfast is the most important meal of the day and that’s especially true in the cold, dark winter months. But many of us rush off to work or school without bothering with a breakfast boost to help get us going.
This January, between the 24th and 30th, Hampshire Farmers’ Markets is supporting National Farmhouse Breakfast Week which aims to highlight how vital it is to ensure that adults and children alike start the day the right way.
On 24th January at Chandlers Ford Farmers’ Market, we have lots of special offers of breakfast goods available. While you’re there, why not also explore our many producers who produce fine fare that has all been reared, grown, bottled, baked or pickled within Hampshire or ten miles of the border.
Our offers include:
We’re even offering a great Quick Kedgeree recipe, available below and downloadable from our website – with ingredients available at our markets. In spite of deep snow and sub-zero temperatures, Hampshire Farmers’ Markets producers still turned out at Winchester yesterday at the twice-monthly market.
At a time when many shoppers are finding supermarkets shelves empty and online shopping deliveries cancelled, it was still possible to find high quality local meat, vegetables and other produce at the Farmers’ Market in the city centre.
Despite farmers finding the extreme weather especially difficult as they tend crops and livestock, they are still getting goods to market and Hampshire Farmers Markets is calling for local shoppers to support them in their efforts by visiting their local market.
On the Isle of Wight, producers Godshill Organics didn’t miss a single home delivery to customers from its Farm Shop and other producers have been getting through barely passable roads, unlike many council services.
Hampshire Farmers’ Market spokesman, Alex Handford, said: “I am amazed at the dedication of our producers who’ve battled the worst weather to make sure that customers are not left without fresh food. It just goes to show how much better it is to buy local rather than to rely on food shipped in from across the country or abroad.”
Next weekend there are markets on 17th January at both Andover and Southsea.
